Parish Pastoral Assembly Announced

Posted on 1st July, 2013 in Latest News

The pastoral and missional life of the parishes of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle are governed by Parish Pastoral Plans developed by each Parish. The responsibility for developing that Parish Pastoral Plan lies with the Parish Pastoral Council who, through conversation and consultation, seek to determine the priorities for the pastoral and missional life of the Parish for the next two years. The Parish Pastoral Plan is discussed, amended and ratified at a Parish Pastoral Assembly through which the entire Parish community takes ownership of the priorities that have been discerned. Because of the change in pastoral leadership (i.e. my arrival), the gap between Parish Pastoral Assemblies has been a little longer than usual. Given the circumstances, this is not something that should give anyone cause for concern. It is, however, time for us to once again look at our priorities and consider how we might meet them as a community. To that end, I will convoke a Parish Pastoral Assembly on Sunday 10th November beginning at 10:30am in the Parish Hall. I would ask that all parishioners not this date in their diaries now in order to ensure that as many people as possible are able to attend the Assembly, and be part of discerning the priorities for our pastoral and missional life for the period 2014-2015. In keeping with the general structure of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan, the areas to be considered fall into five categories: · Worship and Prayer · Leadership and Structure · Mission and Outreach · Formation and Education · Identity and Community. It should be noted that it is not necessary for priorities to be identified in each of these areas, they are simply a tool to ensure that a Parish considers all the areas of Parish life in the pastoral planning process. As a result of the Parish Pastoral Assembly, it is hoped that the Parish community can discern between five and seven priorities that it will seek to address over the coming two years. The Parish Pastoral Council has already been considering these priorities for most of the year, and may wish to present some recommendations as to priorities to the Parish community for the Assembly’s consideration, amendment, rejection or adoption. This is in keeping with the role of the Parish Pastoral Council. In addition, any parishioner is welcome to make a submission regarding what they perceive as priorities for the pastoral and missional life of the Parish in preparation for the Assembly. These submissions should be addressed to the Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council, and be as detailed as is possible in order for them to receive appropriate consideration. Such submissions should be received by the Council no later than the beginning of October. Please note: Only those priorities that are submitted in time to be included in the papers prepared for the Assembly will be entertained. Submissions from the floor of the Assembly will not be entertained. There is an old and well worn adage that is crucial to the success of the Parish Pastoral Assembly, and indeed of the Parish Pastoral Plan: “Decisions are made by those who turn up”. The Parish will only benefit from a Pastoral Plan and Pastoral Assembly if people are prepared to engage in the process. If we are not prepared to do...
